7 Books to buddy read this fall!

Fall is upon us, like all the dead crunchy-looking leaves you totally keep going out of your way to step on.

But anyway, it’s the season to grab an unnaturally orange pumpkin-flavored beverage and a reading buddy, and time to get that TBR into shape! Here are 7 of the reads you and aforementioned reading buddy will definitely want on the list.

Frankly in Love by David Yoon

Frankly-in-Love-COVER

You’ll need a reading buddy to cope with all of your feelings both while and after reading this book. And 10/10 would recommend getting in on the stained pages of the first print run before they’re gone!

About the book: High school senior Frank Li is a Limbo–his term for Korean-American kids who find themselves caught between their parents’ traditional expectations and their own Southern California upbringing. His parents have one rule when it comes to romance–“Date Korean”–which proves complicated when Frank falls for Brit Means, who is smart, beautiful–and white. Fellow Limbo Joy Song is in a similar predicament, and so they make a pact: they’ll pretend to date each other in order to gain their freedom. Frank thinks it’s the perfect plan, but in the end, Frank and Joy’s fake-dating maneuver leaves him wondering if he ever really understood love–or himself–at all.

I Know You Remember by Jennifer Donaldson

I-Know-You-Remember

This one will be a race between you and designated Reading Buddy to see who can figure it out first. In the same thrilling vein of One of Us Is Lying, Jennifer Donaldson will keep you guessing to the last page.

About the book: Zahra Gaines is missing. After three long years away, Ruthie Hayden arrives in her hometown of Anchorage, Alaska to this devastating news. Zahra was Ruthie’s best friend–the only person who ever really understood her–and she vows to do whatever it takes to find her.
Zahra vanished from a party just days before Ruthie’s return, but the more people she talks to, the more she realizes that the Zahra she knew disappeared long before that fateful night. Gone is the whimsical, artistic girl who loved books and knew Ruthie’s every secret. In her place is an athlete, a partier, a girl with secrets of her own. Darker still are the rumors that something happened to Zahra while Ruthie was gone, something that changed her forever…
As Ruthie desperately tries to piece together the truth, she falls deeper and deeper into her friend’s new world, circling closer to a dangerous revelation about what Zahra experienced in the days before her disappearance–one that might be better off buried.

Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall

Rules-for-Vanishing

Personal note from the person writing this: I literally had to send this book to my sister halfway through reading it because I needed to talk to someone about it. THAT’S HOW GOOD IT IS. Grab a fellow magical realism-loving reader who can stomach some very creepy plot twists and prepare to step onto Lucy Gallows’ road.

About the bookIn the faux-documentary style of The Blair Witch Project comes the campfire story of a missing girl, a vengeful ghost, and the girl who is determined to find her sister–at all costs.

Once a year, the path appears in the forest and Lucy Gallows beckons. Who is brave enough to find her–and who won’t make it out of the woods?

It’s been exactly one year since Sara’s sister, Becca, disappeared, and high school life has far from settled back to normal. With her sister gone, Sara doesn’t know whether her former friends no longer like her…or are scared of her, and the days of eating alone at lunch have started to blend together. When a mysterious text message invites Sara and her estranged friends to “play the game” and find local ghost legend Lucy Gallows, Sara is sure this is the only way to find Becca–before she’s lost forever. And even though she’s hardly spoken with them for a year, Sara finds herself deep in the darkness of the forest, her friends–and their cameras–following her down the path. Together, they will have to draw on all of their strengths to survive. The road is rarely forgiving, and no one will be the same on the other side.

Fireborne by Rosaria Munda

FIREBORNE

This is the kind of book you need to read with someone for the same reason immediately live-texted your bestie while watching Game of Thrones. There’s just so much happening at once and it’s executed so shockingly well you’ll need to share your reactions with someone in real time.

About the book: Annie and Lee were just children when a brutal revolution changed their world, giving everyone—even the lowborn—a chance to test into the governing class of dragonriders.
Now they are both rising stars in the new regime, despite backgrounds that couldn’t be more different. Annie’s lowborn family was executed by dragonfire, while Lee’s aristocratic family was murdered by revolutionaries. Growing up in the same orphanage forged their friendship, and seven years of training have made them rivals for the top position in the dragonriding fleet.
But everything changes when survivors from the old regime surface, bent on reclaiming the city.
With war on the horizon and his relationship with Annie changing fast, Lee must choose to kill the only family he has left or to betray everything he’s come to believe in. And Annie must decide whether to protect the boy she loves . . . or step up to be the champion her city needs.

Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera

juliet

Speaking of lots to discuss, Juliet Takes a Breath will give you a lot to unpack. It’s the kind of book you put down every now and then, stare blankly at the wall, and repeat the quote on the cover, and you’ll want a reading buddy to share it with!

About the book: Juliet Milagros Palante is leaving the Bronx and headed to Portland, Oregon. She just came out to her family and isn’t sure if her mom will ever speak to her again. But Juliet has a plan, sort of, one that’s going to help her figure out this whole “Puerto Rican lesbian” thing. She’s interning with the author of her favorite book: Harlowe Brisbane, the ultimate authority on feminism, women’s bodies, and other gay-sounding stuff.

Will Juliet be able to figure out her life over the course of one magical summer? Is that even possible? Or is she running away from all the problems that seem too big to handle?

With more questions than answers, Juliet takes on Portland, Harlowe, and most importantly, herself.

A River of Royal Blood by Amanda Joy

RiverofRoyalBlood_CV_ONLINE

This vibrant, fast-paced debut is perfect for a fall fantasy to buddy read! Prepare for the ultimate sibling rivalry and a few shocking twists that you’ll need to talk to someone about after reading ASAP.

About the book: Sixteen-year-old Eva is a princess, born with the magick of marrow and blood–a dark and terrible magick that hasn’t been seen for generations in the vibrant but fractured country of Myre. Its last known practitioner was Queen Raina, who toppled the native khimaer royalty and massacred thousands, including her own sister, eight generations ago, thus beginning the Rival Heir tradition. Living in Raina’s long and dark shadow, Eva must now face her older sister, Isa, in a battle to the death if she hopes to ascend to the Ivory Throne–because in the Queendom of Myre only the strongest, most ruthless rulers survive.

When Eva is attacked by an assassin just weeks before the battle with her sister, she discovers there is more to the attempt on her life than meets the eye–and it isn’t just her sister who wants to see her dead. As tensions escalate, Eva is forced to turn to a fey instructor of mythic proportions and a mysterious and handsome khimaer prince for help in growing her magick into something to fear. Because despite the love she still has for her sister, Eva will have to choose: Isa’s death or her own.
