Top things we can’t wait for this fall: season lattes. Scarves. Stepping on crunchy leaves. And…the fourth book in the Miss Peregrine series!! Unless you’ve been living in another galaxy, you’ve probably heard of the Miss Peregrine series (or the Miss Peregrine movie, which came out last year) but in case you haven’t – read on for 8 things you need to know about these spooky, wondrously strange books by author Ransom Riggs!
Here’s what you need to know about the Miss Peregrine Series:
There are 3 books in the main series so far
The first book is Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, which is followed by Hollow City and then Library of Souls. And book four comes out this fall on October 10! Add it to your Goodreads shelf here.
And one companion book
Tales of the Peculiar is a collection of fairytales about the Peculiar world and it’s absolutely beautiful.
It stars 16-year-old Jacob Portman
Jacob first hears stories about peculiar children and Miss Peregrine from his grandfather Abraham, who shows him photos of these children. When Abraham dies, Jacob visits him and witnesses a strange humanoid creature that only he can see. His grandfather tells him to “…find the bird in the loop on the other side of the old man’s grave on September 2940, and tell them what happened.” No one believes Jacob about the invisible monster, and a psychiatrist tells him to go to Wales, the location of Abraham’s children’s home. And this is how the journey begins…eerie, right?
“Peculiar” children have unusual powers
When Jacob finds his grandfather’s children’s home, he meets the teens who live there – each possessing a special power. For example, one boy is invisible and can only be seen if he’s wearing clothes, one girl has a mouth at the back of her head and another can manipulate fire.
An Ymbryne is a peculiar who can make time loops
So this whole time loop thing. The peculiar children live inside of a time loop, which means they relive the same day forever.
Miss Peregrine is an Ymbryne
And the reason they live inside this time loop is because Miss Peregrine created it to protect them. From what, exactly? Hollowgasts – the creepy tentacle-mouthed creatures that killed Jacob’s grandfather.
It’s haunting and enchanting all at once
Jacob and his newfound group of peculiars battle hollowgasts, time travel in and out of the loop, encounter talking animals, war-torn London and meet a menagerie of characters who make these books chilling, thrilling, and everything between.
It has incredible vintage photographs inside
All of this incredible world-building is accompanied by amazing old photographs that the author Ransom Riggs curated and makes reading that much more eerie.
The first book was made into a movie directed by Tim Burton
And really, there’s no other director we’d pick to bring this story to life.
