my book is out and now I pretty much just feel like vom-ing. Always a unique challenge to release something you love this much into the wild. The truth is, this book won’t be for everyone. In fact, it may be for a somewhat small cross section of readers, so now it’s time for me to let go and hope it makes its way to the readers who need it. Despite being pitched as a romance, to me, A Million Junes is very much the story of a father and a daughter. It’s the story of a girl learning how to release the past to more fully experience the present. It’s about forgiveness and grace and the ways that we let one another down, and more than anything it’s about how we find value in life when we know, inescapably and unchangeably, that even the most beautiful lives will be marred by grief. This book was my way of wrestling with loss, and the painful truth that to love someone is to accept a future grief. It’s a decision that the joy of love will outweigh the deep pain of saying goodbye. And as hard as it still is for me to say that, I do believe it’s true. I believe love is worth loss, that our lives find value in all the quiet moments when we tend to our small circles of people and places well. I believe that no matter how difficult goodbyes are, the hellos and I love yous are worth it. So in a way today I’m saying goodbye to A MILLION JUNES, a story that has consumed my life for about two years now. I’m thankful for the time that it was mine and only mine, but now it’s time for it to find its people.
